The history of indigenous peoples in Mexico is governed by very particular concepts in their environment. One of these notions is related to the use of entheogenic plants, a term coined by Gordon R. Wasson, which means “becoming divine within.” They are used in ceremonies led by healers, shamans or “witches” to provide an encounter with the divine. This issue places the use of plants such as mushrooms, marijuana or peyote beyond the recreational effect that is usually sought outside of indigenous communities. In this reunion, we attend to the specific uses of Mazatecs, Huichols, Otomíes, Nahuas and Mayas and the way in which their environment is linked to extraordinary realities, so that human spirits and gods coexist in the same space.
